'Is There Anybody Out There' - Pink Floyd Cover (4K) - Alhambra Guitar
I first played this piece back in the late seventies when the album 'The Wall' first came out, we all did, in the very active guitar player scene around me in those days it was a classic party piece. In truth few of us were playing it as per the original, and I found myself morphing into different emphasis points, and overall different dynamics which were impressions of what the original was drawn from memory, that developed through not listening to the original again for years., but still playing it here and there. So for this recording I thought rather than trying to slavishly play it like the original I'd stick to my direction of a version that both fits me better and which allows for my playing limitations, and to capture the personal impression version of the piece that I had in memory. I re-listened to the original to catch up with the right things to play, and for the backing instruments, which included re-learning violin for three notes :-) .

All being well, a step forward in what is still a very new process for me, even if I've been at it for years! :-) It's my take on a Stevie Wonder classic. Again I used some skills from Fiverr, a great resource: Lead Vocal and backing vocals: magiclmp Lead guitar: germetalguitar Drums: bigbogh And the rest is me and family with: Backing vocals: Sarah Hill and Rachel MIller.

Some new ground for me with my first Maple neck. Again Fibre optics were used for side dot markers, and all woods were reclaimed from various furniture sources, including my Parents old bedroom suite for the birdseye Maple veneer. Frets are Stewmac Gold. Zero fret used with Bone string guide. To aid wear the fretboard is finished in superglue, the rest 2K lacquer. Main body is Ash, from a coffe...

Some stills from when I remembered to take photos :-) . For my 'second' full build I figured on making three instruments at once to save setting up time etc. It wasn't that simple in the end but they all came good. This is the first to be conceived. A seven string Exp style with compact body. All wood recycled apart from the Walnut top which was redirected from it's original purpose. All wood I...

All timber was reclaimed. The side dot markers are luminescent, frets are semi hemispherical with a...

The question to be answered here was, are they worthwhile. No doubt, after some light fettling, yes. My plans for this one were not critical on it's playability, but I was intrigued to see if it would beat another kids guitar I have, the CB Sky. To which it's fair to say there's no comparison, the Gear4music version is a much more faithful and practical scale down, actually usable for the purpo...

That second shot sounded too good I bet the shooting cycle must feel like cutting butter with a hot knife, plus the recoilless crispy trigger. Power doesn't matter anymore when you have these
@@Gen_0123 it's still like it after all these years.
@JesHill do you have a tutorial video for that on your channel feels free to link me
@Player_s04 I don't, but there's a few on YT.
Had this done to a Yamaha BB800 around 1985. They mixed sawdust with the Superglue to fill in the cracks I was told. Still going strong. No coating on the rosewood fingerboard. Playing round wound strings for almost 40 years and there is only minor wear on the bare rosewood. After removing frets the nut slots can be cut deeper for improved intonation and action. ALSO tighten the truss rod for a nice flat neck. Without frets there is little or no need for relief.
Your play is so inspiring! I immediately rush to unpack my basses.
That Jaco tone is incredible. Great playing.
Bravo! Incredible
Thank you, very much appreciated.
Amazing. Great to see old stuff being reused
It's become a theme in my builds to use reclaimed woods, I've been lucky to source nice hardwoods that were felled many years ago recently from an estate sale, the guy was a keen carpenter, enough wood to see me out in builds. I'll certainly never buy new supply hardwoods that are not sustainable whatever happens. This particular bass is very much still in use and features on a few of my videos, it's a happy accident for sure, but a keeper.

Thank you, much appreciated.
Excellent free hand work. That is the most fun way. I just built a flatbottom tractor airboat with a K&B .65 Glow Engine and vane stearing and was wondering if I should add a water rudder. I have a ton of old balsa water ski production blanks, so I simply used a foam boogie board as the starting plug and planked the whole boogie board top, sides and bottom with 3/8" balsa sheathing and polyester fiberglassed he bottom and sides with a turned up balsa nose. It is quite heavy. The next one will be hollow and light. As you know, real hydroplanes barely float and foam is deceptively heavy, so I doubt if light weight carbon fiber is any advantage in your application. Carbon fiber holds no advantage over fiberglass in a heavy hydroplane, but I understand you were doing for the carbon fiber laying experience. It appears the trimaran types of model hydroplanes are the fastest with airscrews.
Wow, sounds gorgeous, Jes! Great video and I love that you played (relearned!) the violin for this!! 🤘🏽🤘🏽

After making my neck of my jazz bass fretless 3 years ago and after trying to finish it myself unsuccessfully. I contacted Jes Hill around mid December last year about possibly coating my jazz bass neck coated like the way the bass was in the video. I feel like I’m understating this when I say this man did such an amazing job! His attention to detail and the professionalism and high level of detail I honestly couldn’t thank him enough I honestly can’t recommend Jes enough! His quality of service and the speed he got everything done in is just incredible not to mention he sent me updates and photos of the neck along the way and was amazing at getting back to me quickly if I ever had a question or anything Check out his videos of all the instruments that he’s worked on and you’ll be amazed at his level of craftsmanship and quality You did an amazing job Jes! and I hope you go on to succeed in everything you work on! 1000/1000
Many thanks for that. I'd love to hear some music you use the bass for when you're ready.
I'm building one just like yours but I want to use a brushless motor instead of a nitro motor, what size motor and kv would be equivalent to your size nitro motor you have? Thanks!
I've little knowledge of electrics, this was a 'sports' 10cc engine (.60 ci) so a 300 - 500 kv motor. 'crispyspa' would be worth checking out on YT as he's a lot of experience with an electric version.
Chris did design a nice boat
Indeed he did.
Finally someone has actually built an exceptionally beautiful craft.
Beautiful Fender fretless jazz bass Mexico. It sounds good, this is what a fretless jazz bass should sound like.
Indeed it is 😊
Are the props Home made or purchased?
Purchased, they are handed APC.'s. mounted backwards. It turns out they should have both been the same hand to be original. They are a little too heavy really, I'm working on lightweight ones from 3D printing as they get going better in lighter winds
Very well done. Was it made from scratch? Are there any drawings for this plane?
Yes, is was made from scratch. I made up some 2D drawings by digitising some line drawings I found online, then scaled to suit. It was digitised in Corel draw, ultimately I'm planning to use the 2D to be the source for CNC cutting, I've not got a big enough machine yet. I could sort a scalable PDF file if it's of use to you, or the original .cdr if you can read it.
A pdf file would be great …how could you send it?
I’m a tool room machinist in Canada and have access to larger hass cnc mills. Do you have any G code programs?
I use Easel Pro at the moment to generate g-code for this sort of thing. Most of what I do with a CNC router at home is profile work and I find it simple for that purpose. I'm going to try some .dxf exports from Corel of this drawing that Easel can work with, and see if I can work it out.
At one moment during the second half, Michael, I almost thought you were going to quote “River People”. It definitely sounds as if you’re dining your own take on Jaco’s approach. Most players seeking to emulate Jaco just mimic him. That was not my motivation after the late 90s. I kind of switched to desiring to emulate Victor Wooten’s approach to fretless - with a slice of Les Claypool whose own fingerboards are so well coated in this fashion (but probably with two-component epoxy instead of superglue) that they allow him to slap on his fretless bass guitars without risking damaging the fingerboard. It’s 20 December, 2023 as I leave this comment. Previously, there was one other upload that I had seen of an electric bass with a fingerboard coated in cyanoacrylate. It’s from a channel called None of Your Business. The proprietor of the channel, who was from Germany and spoke impeccable English, talked about how disappointed he was when he finished modifying his own Ibanez five string fretless with the superglue coating and discovered it detracted some of the mid range overtones he liked and pushed high range overtones he wasn’t so keen on. I don’t get the impression that you were disappointed in how either of your fretless bass mods came out when you had finished applying that superglue.
Thanks for that. I'll point Michael to your comment, but from my side a lot has happened since this video and I'd like to point out a few things to add to the consideration. The fact that the surface changes the tone of the instrument is a given, obvious even, and that does mean a significant shift from existing tone to the changed boards output. One element is quite off-putting, the acoustic sound these make, there's snippets of it in this vid where Mike was talking whilst playing so were not gated out on the vox mic, but I make a point of suggesting that people listen to these first plugged in and isolated if not at stage volumes. The clack that comes off the neck, which doesn't come through the pickups, is quietly alarming, similar to aluminium fingerboards, but with the wooden clack behind it rather than a piano fizz. I've had a few players say to me that the necks get better over time, but I believe it's the player getting used to the surface as having checked over necks that are years old now they really aren't any different with no channels that strings have dug into effecting tone etc. And one example where I've done the same instrument twice because I wanted to change the position markers and it was no different from being two years old to being refreshed. A lot of very fine disciplines need enhancing one this surface as it shows up less than ideal string damping, fingering pressures, harmonics etc by shouting about them somewhat. So yes, the tonal makeup changes, some of that can be dialled in/out, some of it is simply not what you can get from this surface, so on the tone front it's more of an extension of options. From a personal perspective I've made a point of not trying to achieve a sound of somebody else, I'm not capable, or interested tbh, and whilst I might be inspired by the good guys that was never one of the initial drivers for using cyano, it was always about wear. I started playing fretless in the early eighties and through wanting to use round wounds I was very disappointed with wear rates. Rosewood was pretty much useless, it would last a few weeks, best quality dense Ebony maybe a year or so before needing attention, flatwound strung equivalents almost no problem at all. As my day job has me working with Composites Engineers I explored the various resins and whilst some are really good they all wore at rates that didn't give much advantage and significantly really sat on the surface so when its breached, game over. Cyano, the right type, penetrates and hardens the wood itself to a greater depth, it's a very different result with a very, very, thin top coating that should be measured in microns. The epoxies also sound out somewhere between the cyano and bare wood, so again they do offer that tonal property which is different. My first cyano'd bass is now four years old an there's no sight of it needing to be recoated yet. Finally, and this is the tricky bit, at the simplest level the fingerboard has to be very precise to give any chance of evenness along its length, at the highest level forming into the profile allowances for relief continuity where the truss rod can not influence it, i.e. at the top of the neck, and even multi-compound radii are now shaped in, so that's a regular compound radius say from 7 1/4 to 16 but actually a parabola at the top where it might be 12 one side and 16 the other. To be able to do that uses tooling that I've not seen anybody use on any form of shaping ever. And I'm keeping that to myself, which is why this is the tricky bit 🙂. The thing is that the cyano with it shouting out so much mechanically shows up any flaw and can be very off-putting, where the comparatively dulled flatspot or whatever might be a slight difference on a bare wood neck, the cyano shows them up with greater contrast between sounding out and the dull spot. As such I often wonder just what quality of work went before some of the, very few, negative responses to this process.

Brilliant video. I have a les paul copy which I took a risk on because I liked the finish. Long story short it was a horror show. It's buzzing in random positions even though the frets are level and truss rod has been adjusted. I thought rather than chuck it why not make a fretless. I enjoy tinkering more than playing even if I'm a novice. I just learn as I go,I've had some failures and a few really good results :)
Thanks. Since this video I've found I liked the guitar so much I swapped out the body for something much better, I used it for backing on my First Guitar Build vid although it's now yellow 🙂, Something good from very little, no bad thing. At some point I'll purpose make one though, fretless guitar fascinates me and its worth pursuing.
And what a beauty this is and a joy to play!

I've always just glassed my builds, "Epoxy and Alcohol" I'd love to learn your way, and watch you build man...
Thank you. Methods vary according to the needs, but I'll give you something to take away and experiment with. I see a significant difference between a good build and one that's just that step up from that is the quality of surfaces and edges. To aid those I only use metal rubbing blocks to wrap abrasive around. I use dead flat gauge steel mostly, sometime brass, but always as flat as can be. This allows easier feel for working on high spots in small areas, is unforgiving in tolerance so surfaces are not just rounded down, and over any size surface can generate pretty much optically true flats, and curves are also easier to get right. Get hold of some small blocks of steel, repurpose something maybe, and try it on a few materials. Concave surfaces need curved blocks, that can come later. At some point it will click, and you'll never go back to rubber or wooden blocks again when shaping.
